The Brief Seek Design was commissioned to create feature installations, wayfinding, signage and glass manifestations for SMBC Aviation’s Dublin workplace, bringing a strong sense of identity to key shared spaces including the reception, atrium and waiting areas. The brief explored the connection between SMBC’s Japanese heritage and its Dublin location through landscape, folklore, traditional craft, materiality and the shared themes of flight and journey.

The Design We developed a series of site-specific installations inspired by stories and traditions shared between Ireland and Japan. The Reception Hanging Installation is a large-scale Suspended Art Installation inspired by flight, pioneering Irish aviator Lady Mary Heath, and Lafcadio Hearn / Koizumi Yakumo, whose journey from Ireland to Japan created a natural connection between the two cultures. In the atrium, a second Suspended Art Installation references the Irish Selkie and Japanese Hagoromo folktales. Soft, aerodynamic forms suggest movement, transformation and the idea of travelling between worlds. The wider project also included a bespoke wayfinding and signage system, glass manifestations and environmental graphics, creating a consistent visual language throughout the workplace.

The Outcome The finished workplace has a strong identity without relying on conventional branding. Each installation responds to its architectural setting while contributing to a wider narrative of flight, landscape and cultural connection.
